Laura X does something incredible every day of her life. She is a feminist icon, pioneering women’s historian, and lifelong crusader against sexism. For all she continues to do to help our Berkeley community and the country as a whole, Laura X deserves to be recognized as a Chris Kindness Award recipient.
Laura was instrumental in bringing to light the achievements and contributions of women in science, arts, and politics. Prior to her creating a list of these women, which grew to become The Women’s History Research Center, women’s accomplishments and contributions had been ignored and forgotten. There were no college courses or departments of women’s studies when she began this project.
Laura also campaigned successfully, to make spousal rape a criminal offense, and helped other states to do the same. She was also an active participant in many other efforts, including the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, the Women’s Strike for Peace, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, the civil right movement and the Free Speech Movement.
Throughout her life, Laura has been committed to improving the status of women and to working on other social justice movements. This means she has worked untold hours to improve the lives of women and other vulnerable groups.
